Food for the Hungry (FH) has announced its involvement in bringing aid to those struck by Tropical Cyclone Pam. FH has provided a grant to TEAR Fund New Zealand, who, along with other Integral Alliance partners, is responding both to the imminent emergency and to recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the area.

When Tropical Cyclone Pam struck the South Pacific on Wednesday, March 11, it left a path of devastation that affected nine nations including Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Fiji, Tuvalu and Papua New Guinea. The island nation of Vanuatu was particularly hard hit, with thousands of people displaced from their homes due to the destruction.

“When a disaster like this strikes, there is an urgent need for shelter, medical supplies, food and water,” said FH President and CEO, Gary Edmonds. “Each and every time, FH and our partners at Integral Alliance mobilize immediately and implement a coordinated response that brings the funds and services directly to those suffering in the wake of the disaster.”

Integral Alliance members have established an Integral Hub to coordinate the response that is bringing sanitation equipment, clean water and food to the 33,000 displaced people who are living in 37 evacuation centers. After meeting the immediate needs of survivors, Integral members will work with the island residents to rebuild not only their homes, but also to replant their gardens, which were decimated by Tropical Cyclone Pam.
