Emma Peasley, the champion of the 2014 Missoula County Spelling Bee competition, won the title again this year as announced in Ravalli Republic. eReflect, a strong proponent of literacy and exceptional spelling skills, congratulates Emma Peasley for her extraordinary devotion and love for language and her back-to-back winning of the Missoula County Spelling Bee Championship. Emma is an eighth grader who attributes her love of language and spelling efficiency to a month-long sailboat trip to New Zealand that she took with her parents when she was six.

On this sailboat trip from Seattle to New Zealand, six-year-old Emma had her first extensive immersion in reading. The 17,000-mile long trip to New Zealand consisted of not only sea gazing and admiring the view, but of a lot of reading. This early exposure to large amounts of reading at the age of six contributed greatly to the development of her spelling acumen. Although she didn’t study spelling per se, the mere activity of reading was enough to help her gain an understanding of spelling patterns and rules. While she read, she was able to learn words, including their meaning and orthography. Once back at shore, Emma’s strong visual memory helped her recall the words she read in her books while on the open sea, and to practice spelling them.

Emma's love and passion for reading might explain why, for two consecutive years, she has been named the champion of the Missoula County Spelling Bee challenge. eReflect considers Emma’s story an inspiration for every young student who wishes to improve their spelling, but don’t have access to spelling programs or tutors. Reading, although not enough on its own, can considerably help people to learn to spell correctly. To improve spelling skills, students are also encouraged to play spelling games and ask their instructors for activities and tools they can use to become better at spelling.
