Shape-Up for Summer with Water Wellness

It’s, therefore, the perfect time to spruce up and improve your general fitness by taking up some form of regular exercise, and what better way to get fit than having a splash around in the water!
The latest government guidelines recommend, to stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate physical activity every week. A rule of thumb is that 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity is about the same as 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity. Worryingly, only a fraction of the population manages even that.
Swimming is in the top ten popular types of exercise, after walking and running in the UK. There's probably a pool near your home or workplace or better still if you have the space and budget you could consider some form of pool or hot tub at home.
One of the biggest health benefits of swimming is that it's non-weight bearing, which means you won't be putting any strain on muscles and joints. Swimming exercises the whole body and is an excellent way to tone up and get trim. Doing a few lengths involves most of the muscle groups. If you increase the pace, you'll get an aerobic workout too. Swimming can also help you lose weight if you swim at a steady and continuous pace throughout the session. You could also join a swimming club or sign up for pool workout sessions, such as aqua aerobics. Not only does swimming help you lose weight and tone up, but it can also improve balance, increase flexibility, and help relieve stress and tension.
If you prefer a gentler for form of water wellness, a hot tub can offer some incredible hydrotherapy benefits. The warm water and bubbles will reduce the gravitational pull of your body, dilating the blood vessels which means less pressure on your heart, helping you cope with stress and anxiety and giving your body and mind time to relax. The temperature of the water will also induce perspiration which will help your body get rid of impurities and any water retention, which is an excellent way to detox your body and help those people who wish to lose weight or are struggling with cellulite. The experience of using a Hot Tub will release the body’s natural feel-good chemicals called endorphins, which will make a person feel happy and relaxed - another factor that will help those suffering from anxiety or depression.
The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) and the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) have joined force to promote the health benefits that water wellness can bring. BISHTA has begun with a ‘Happiness is a Hot Tub’ Campaign, which launches in April. It all starts with a photo competition where people are invited to share their Hot Tub Selfie photos for a chance to win a prize and their winning image to front the campaign. Entries to the competition will be shared on the BISHTA website (http://www.bishta.co.uk) and Facebook page (/PoolsHotTubs) with the hashtag #Happinessisahottub.
