Nu Yale Glacier Dry Cleaning has been in business since 1956. It is a family owned enterprise that has continued to thrive based on its quality and service and the ownership’s keen insight on serving the Jeffersonville, Indiana community. In its latest evolution as a business, the company took the lead on ensuring environmental stewardship within the industry. EnviroForensics, an Indiana-based environmental consulting firm is now working with the dry cleaning enterprise to remediate any possible PCE contamination in Nu Yale’s hometown of Jeffersonville to ensure its residents and the company can continue to thrive in the 21st Century.
“EnviroForensics started right away to collect and test soil samples from the ground under Nu Yale’s plant,” says Gary Maloney, Nu Yale’s president and co-owner.
Maloney and his brothers, Michael and Bill, have been involved with Nu Yale since the 1970s when they purchased the company from their uncle Wilbur Horlander, who started the family business in1956.
Nu Yale operates 11 locations, five in Indiana and six in Kentucky and is the only Kentuckiana dry cleaners listed in “America’s Best Cleaners.”
The perchloroethlene cleanup is being performed at the company’s original plant at 2940 Holmans Lane, which has housed a cleaning operation since the 1970‘s. The ground beneath the cleaning plant contains remnants of perchloroethlene (perc or PCE), a once-common dry cleaning solvent now classified as a pollutant. PCE can migrate through soil, ground water and (as vapor) air.
Nu Yale is no stranger to environmental stewardship. Nu Yale has evolved with the growing concerns for the environment and switched its dry cleaning solvent. Currently. Nu Yale utilizes the Glacier Dry Cleaning process developed by Solvair, which cleans with biodegradable cleaning solvents deemed environmentally friendly. The new system uses liquid carbon dioxide that is highly effective in removing stains. When pressure is reduced at the end of the cleaning cycle, carbon dioxide reverts back to gas and is vented out of the dry cleaning machine, leaving clothes clean and dry.
EnviroForensics expects the remediation of the PCE to be completed over the next few years.
“In the meantime, Nu Yale’s customers and neighbors can rest assured that the environment in that area of Jeffersonville is already safer,” says Brad Lewis, EnviroForensics’ senior scientist for the Nu Yale project.

EnviroForensics’ Lewis comments, “Finding pollution and minimizing its effects can take several years. During the summer of 2013, EnviroForensics completed an excavation of contaminated soil inside the Nu Yale site building. This excavation was complicated by the presence of load bearing building foundations, underground utilities and limited waste staging areas.”
He continues, “Following excavation, we installed groundwater monitoring wells to evaluate the soil removal’s effect on groundwater quality. The removal of soil continues to show a positive effect on groundwater contaminant concentrations. EnviroForensics continues to evaluate and implement cleanup actions at the Nu-Yale facility.”
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has inspected the site and approved EnviroForensics’ clean up and on-going water monitoring.
