Miller Public Adjusters Comments on Recent Report that Insurance Companies Will be Experiencing a Winter Related Spike in Claims
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 30, 2015 -- With winter comes freezing temperatures and ice, and correspondingly, the insurance industry experiences a spike in submitted weather and cold-related claims, says David Miller, Owner and Licensed Public Adjuster at Miller Public Adjusters. As winter begins to ease into spring, many homeowners are addressing the problems they have experienced with their homes, and going through the claims process.
According to WTOP Washington (2/20/15), insurance companies across the country are anticipating a spike in the number of claims filed for damage caused by the winter freeze; while burst pipes are the most common form of damage, homeowners can also file claims for water damage caused by snow and ice buildup as well as collapse claims.
"The three main types of damages we dealt with this winter were structural collapse; water damage from bursting pipes; and house fires from heaters, fireplaces or some sort of electrical fixture," Miller explains. "House fires can be the most destructive, but collapse from the weight of snow and ice can also lead to many structural issues and repairs."
If a homeowner discovers a burst pipe in their home, Miller says it's important to turn off the water, then have a water damage restoration expert examine and mitigate the damage. It is also important for them to notify their insurance company and/or agent in order to file a claim. Then, they should bring in a trusted insurance claim expert -- such as a public insurance adjuster -- to assess the damage and advise the proper steps to work through the insurance claim from start to finish.
"We don't recommend that you attempt to clean up the water yourself," he says. "Before any work has started, it may be wise to confirm coverage for the loss. If not, you may be stuck paying for the damages out of pocket if the insurance company doesn't cover the loss. Calling an expert public adjuster can ensure that your claim gets handled properly and you have someone to protect your interests."
At Miller Public Adjusters, a local and leading public adjusting firm, the winter and early spring is by far the busiest time of year due to the higher volume of insurance claims. However, Miller says every client is treated as a top priority.
"We handle each claim like it was our own," Miller says. "Our company mission is to exceed expectations. We pride ourselves in top notch customer service and honest and ethical claims handling while serving the best interests of our clients."
