For the third consecutive year, the Chicago personal injury and medical malpractice law firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. is sponsoring a Scholarship Essay Contest to support education and raise awareness about the issue of distracted driving.

The contest is open to Illinois high school seniors and first-year college students. Students are asked to write an essay that answers the question, “How serious is the problem of distracted driving among young drivers?”

Students are also asked to describe any personal experiences with distracted driving and to provide suggestions on what can be done to encourage young drivers to avoid this risky driving behavior.

“Our law firm sees the tragic results of distracted driving on a regular basis, as we represent victims who have been seriously injured as a result of another driver failing to pay attention or texting on their cell phone,” said T.J. Saye, the firm’s Chief Operating Officer. “We hope this essay contest makes young drivers aware of the distracted driving epidemic and leads them to change their behavior.”

The firm will award eight scholarships worth a combined $5,000. Entries must be submitted by Friday, April 24, 2015.

A panel of judges from the firm will select the top eight essays and award scholarships in the following amounts:

  • First place – $2,500
  • Second place – $1,500
  • Third place – $500
  • Honorable mention – $100 each to five students.

The scholarship funds can be used for tuition or for any school-related expenses. Winners will be announced Monday, May 4, 2015.

In the first two years of the contest, the law firm invited law school students from across the country to write about topics that included nursing home abuse, distracted driving and failure to diagnose patients in hospitals. This marks the first year the firm has invited Illinois high school seniors and college students to enter.
