NCWIT Chief Strategy and Growth Officer Ruthe Farmer Receives the British Council’s Education U.K. Alumni Award
Boulder, Colorado (PRWEB) April 01, 2015 -- The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is pleased to announce that its Chief Strategy and Growth Officer Ruthe Farmer received the British Council’s Education U.K. Alumni Award for Social Impact, an award that recognizes alumni who have made an exceptional contribution and commitment to creating positive social change and improving the lives of others.
Since 2008, Ruthe has developed NCWIT Aspirations in Computing into the largest technology talent program for young women in the U.S. Aspirations in Computing is a sweeping national talent development initiative for young women in computing, from kindergarten through graduate school. The initiative provides year-round, high-touch, structured engagement; opportunities and encouragement; as well as lifelong peer and professional support networks for thousands of technically inclined young women.
Ruthe has focused her efforts on girls’ engagement in technology and engineering since 2001 and is dedicated to building inclusive, scalable programs that engage all stakeholders in achieving success. She leads the NCWIT K-12 Alliance, served as the 2012 chair of CSEdWeek, was named a White House Champion of Change for Technology Inclusion in 2013, and was the 2014 recipient of the Anita Borg Institute ABIE Award for Social Impact. Ruthe holds a BA in Communications and German from Lewis & Clark College and an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship from the University of Oxford’s Said Business School.
Ruthe’s U.K. education provided her with both the culture to navigate corporate networks, and the business skills to drive her vision of equality. Her determination for changing women’s underrepresentation in STEM has inspired many young women to do the same.
Ruthe was one of three recipients honored at a gala award ceremony on Saturday, March 21 at the Apella, Alexandria Center in New York City. Mitch Robinson of Aberystwyth University received the Professional Achievement Award and Chandler Robinson of the University of Cambridge received the Entrepreneurial Award. "Alumni relations is about relationships. The applicants who stood out among the pack were the alumni who clearly demonstrated how their U.K. education prepared them for competitive and demanding careers," said Dr. Gretchen Dobson, chair of the U.S. judging panel.
