Study ranks the nation’s top 100 law firms on their effectiveness in using content marketing and social media

Leading firms are beginning to realize the huge opportunity social media presents as a platform for business development.

Good2bSocial and Above the Law have announced the release of the 2014 Social Law Firm Index, which ranks the nation’s top 100 law firms based on the effectiveness of their use of social media. Along with the Index, the partners also announced publication of a White Paper that sets out key findings on the current state of the legal market’s embrace of social media and digital technology.

For the second year in a row, DLA Piper achieved the top ranking in the survey, which reflects the firm’s high level commitment to social media marketing. “Social media is an integral part of our ongoing dialogue with clients and the market. As such, we need to ensure that the DLA Piper brand is as well-represented virtually as it is in other aspects of the business,” said Josh Epstein, Director of Communications (Americas) at DLA Piper. “This ranking is affirmation of DLA Piper’s efforts globally, as well as our historic and ongoing innovation in this area,” said Nick Bell, Head of Communications, EMEA & Asia Pacific.

“The high level take away of this year’s report is that the top law firms have made major strides to improve their social media presence,” explains Guy Alvarez, the Chief Engagement Officer of Good2bSocial, and the driving force behind the study. “The legal market is poised on the brink of a sea change as leading firms are beginning to realize the huge opportunity social media presents as a platform for business development.”

That view is backed up by the sizable increase of more than 60% in the average Social Index score recorded by the law firms covered by the survey from 2013 to 2014. At the same time there has also been a significant increase in the number of firms devoting resources to training lawyers in the more effective use of social media.

While the largest law firms dominate the Social Law Firm rankings, particularly with respect to reach, some relatively smaller firms managed to outperform their larger rivals in terms of their engagement ranking. Fish & Richardson ranked #2 in the rankings for social media engagement. “Our clients are innovators and leaders and they expect us to be savvy when it comes to social media and digital technology,” said Liz Cerasuolo, Director of Communications at Fish & Richardson. “We are honored that our efforts have been recognized in this ranking.”
