Penetrometer PNR 12
The PNR 12 complies with all common penetration tests, including ASTM D 5, ASTM D 217 & EN 1426.

A penetration tester measures the resistance a material provides when pierced. A penetrator of known weight and shape, combined with a known drop time is used. The penetrator is positioned on the surface of the sample and allowed to drop for a set time period. The needle is held in a weighted plunger.

This reproducible measurement technique is used to grade bitumen, mastics, adhesives, waxes, greases and pastes.

Bitumen tests use a needle and the sample is attemperated under water. Accurately determining the position of the test needle in relation to the surface, is one of the most time consuming parts of bitumen testing.

When using traditional instruments this process requires experience and great care to position the needle prior to the test. This positioning introduces the main uncertainties in bitumen penetration measurement.

Newly updated and rebranded under the Anton Paar banner, the PNR 12 features automatic detection of the sample surface. A force sensor in the plunger accurately detects the sample surface, even under water. This decreases test times and reduces operator related measurement error to a minimum. This is fully explained in our new Application Note, Penetration of Bitumen, now available as a free download.

The PNR 12 complies with all common penetration tests, including ASTM D 5, ASTM D 217 & EN 1426.
