BritWeek and UK Trade & Investment have announced that they will honor will.i.am as Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2015 BritWeek UKTI Business Innovation Awards, presented by Virgin Atlantic on April 23, 2015.
will.i.am, a creative innovator, Grammy Award winner, and multi-faceted entertainer, is being honored for his work as founder and CEO of i.am+, the cutting-edge consumer technology company. “I am truly honored to be recognized by BritWeek and the UK Trade & Investment authority and to receive this award. On behalf of all the extraordinarily talented people on the i.am+ team, I thank you,” said will.i.am. “The UK is my home for creativity - this country has allowed me to express myself and sustain my career.”
i.am+ is an entrepreneurial entity that is nurturing and leveraging powerful new technologies based on insights from popular culture to develop products for the connected lifestyle. Specifically, i.am+ creates new products that combine fashion and technology in the evolving wearables segment. In 2014, the i.am+ team debuted the world’s first standalone smart band device, i.amPULS, inclusive of a mobile phone for untethered communications and smart phone functionality. Bringing fashionology to the forefront, i.am+ is collaborating with luxury lifestyle brand and design innovators including Gucci, Zaha Hadid and Kara Ross.
“I couldn’t think of a better person than will.i.am to honor with this award,” said British Consul General Chris O'Connor, “BritWeek and UK Trade & Investment developed the Business Innovation Awards to celebrate and encourage innovation, and to demonstrate how brilliant minds can re-invent the way we live, work, and play. will.i.am and i.am+ are doing just that by re-imagining technology and its role within our lives.”
In addition to i.am+, will.i.am created the i.am angel Foundation, an organization that advocates the importance and power of a good education, and operates after-school programs in Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles. Education and fostering the development of the next generation is very important to him. In fact, in the UK, will.i.am is a supporter of The Prince’s Trust, established by HRH The Prince of Wales. His £500,000 gift to The Trust helped create and fund a new STEM education and computer skills training initiative.
