Concept Searching Publishes Moffitt Cancer Center Case Study
McLean, VA, US and Stevenage, UK (PRWEB) April 09, 2015 -- Concept Searching, the global leader in semantic metadata generation, auto-classification, and taxonomy management software, and developer of the Smart Content Framework™, has published a case study on how Moffitt Cancer Center is using Concept Searching’s compound term processing to deliver relevant and timely information to patients and caregivers.
Moffitt is a not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. As part of an elite group of National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Moffitt focuses on the development of early stage translational research aimed at the rapid translation of scientific discoveries to benefit patients.
In an effort to further enhance care for patients and improve their experience, Moffitt Cancer Center created an online patient portal – the MyMoffitt Patient Portal. The challenge was how to provide individual patients with the information most relevant to their specific health situation while ensuring the information is accurate, medically sound, and secure.
After several years of development Moffitt Cancer Center succeeded in developing a portal for patients and caregivers. The goal was to empower and educate patients with highly targeted and useful information that was specifically relevant to their conditions. Accommodating over 60,000 patients and caregivers seeking on demand, up-to-date, secure, and medically sound information was not easy to achieve. Security issues are critical in the healthcare industry, diverse internal and external repositories had to be available through a single search interface, the use of the portal had to support a wide variety of demographics, and all information had to be continually accurate and medically sound.
According to David Stringfellow, Manager of Portal and Web Technologies at Moffitt Cancer Center, “With more than 60,000 current users, the MyMoffitt Patient Portal has seen significant growth, and of the new patients that come to Moffitt, 100% register for a patient portal account. All developments and enhancements are about improving the patient experience.”
Moffitt Cancer Center deployed conceptClassifier and conceptTaxonomyManager to provide an integrated solution enabling patients to access highly relevant information, specific to their situations. In the case of Moffitt, it enabled content to be automatically classified based on the type of cancer, stage of cancer, medications, and surgical interventions. For example, a piece of content about Astrocytoma would be classified as Brain Cancer because Astrocytoma is a brain neoplasm.
“Moffitt Cancer Center is not just another case study, but illustrates how our technology was used to provide accurate and relevant information, on demand, to cancer patients and their caregivers,” said Martin Garland, President of Concept Searching. “Inaccurate information was not acceptable as it had the potential to impact individual cancer patients and their understanding of their conditions. We are proud of our technology and to have participated in the success of this project,” he concluded.
