St. Croix-based Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Sponsor Living The Dream Fishing Team In Offshore World Championship Fishing Competition
Christiansted, USVI (PRWEB) April 12, 2015 -- Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Partner David Johnson and other members of his “Living The Dream” sportfishing team have been given a chance to compete in the most prestigious offshore fishing tournament in the world. In four days of fishing April 13 - 16, they will travel with Mate Justen Barrett of the St. Maarten-based Oyster fishing team to catch blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, spearfish, swordfish, and other gamefish at the Offshore World Championship in Quepos, Costa Rica.
The Living The Dream team thought they would be staying home this year after winning the big “Marlin Jackpot” prize but taking 2nd place at the St. Martin Billfish Tournament behind Oyster which had the same score, but were the first to release a fish, giving them the tie breaker. This gave the Oyster an automatic bid to participate in the Offshore World Championship.
As the tournament approached, however, several members of the Oyster were unable to make the journey to Costa Rica and the team decided to cancel the trip and surrender their invitation.
“I just wasn’t ready to give up on the competition,” says Barrett. “Right away, I thought of the Living The Dream team. I fished with them in 2013, and we’re all old friends.”

David Johnson and his Living The Dream team were overjoyed to get the call.
“Even with short notice, you can’t pass up an opportunity like this,” says Johnson. “We are so proud and excited to be able to represent St. Croix and the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, and the Billfish Tournament. We are eager to compete against some of the best sport fishing teams in the world!”
The Offshore World Championship is a storied competition that has brought the best sport fishers in the world to the waters of Costa Rica annually since 2013. Last year, a record-breaking 764 billfish were caught and released on the first day, a result of 64 teams from over 20 countries showcasing their skills. Anglers compete to see who can catch and release the most billfish, with different point levels awarded for different types of billfish. The team with the most points at the end of the four-day tournament takes home a set of World Champion rings and a variety of sport fishing gear, including original Guy Harvey artwork and new Shimano reels.
“We’re taking home those rings,” said Johnson. “There’s no doubt that the competition will be tough, but we have a great team ready to show them that St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Maarten are home to the best anglers in the world.”
This year the Offshore World Championship is partnering with The Billfish Foundation to tag hundreds of billfish for scientific observation. Whenever possible, competitors will tag the billfish they catch before releasing them, allowing researchers to learn more about their diet, life cycle, and population size.
