NAB Session on Proposed MVPD Changes Taps OTT Broadcaster BiggyTV as Panelist

BiggyTV, an over-the-top broadcaster seeks same status from FCC as cable and satellite operators in order to compete in the video distribution market targeting consumers.

Kyle Borg, President of BiggyTV participated as a panelist on “You Down with OTT? FCC’s Wheeler: Yeah, You Know Me”, moderated by FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai at the National Association of Broadcasters (“NAB”) annual convention in Las Vegas.

BiggyTV, an Over-The-Top (“OTT”) multichannel video program distributor participated in the panel session during the NAB Convention that traditionally focuses on radio and television broadcasters.

Over-the-top services have hit a saturation point with consumers and the next evolution of OTT is the disruption of Pay-TV or what the FCC classifies as Multichannel Video Programming Distributors (“MVPD”).

Currently cable and satellite companies fall within the FCC’s definition of an MVPD, however In December 2014, the FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would expand the definition of an MVPD to include OTT services such as BiggyTV. BiggyTV provided comments to the FCC on the proposed changes, which were incorporated in NAB’s Reply to Comments.

BiggyTV has a vested interest in seeing the regulatory definition modified; “I see this as an opportunity to level the playing field for video distribution, as well as create new opportunities for content producers and local TV stations through the creation of adjunct OTT linear TV services that drive video discovery,” Mr. Borg commented.

It isn’t clear how much of a fight the FCC will be up against from traditional MVPDs to keep the current definitions, but BiggyTV believes that the changes will benefit all members of NAB and consumers.
