Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn Join Acclaimed Authors at Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels 10th Anniversary Gala in New York
NEW YORK, NY (PRWEB) April 16, 2015 -- Tonight, Jumpstart will bring together prominent journalists, authors, and special guests for their Scribbles to Novels 10th Anniversary Gala at Pier Sixty in New York City. Jumpstart, a national early education organization, helps young children living in under-resourced communities develop the essential skills needed in order to start kindergarten prepared to succeed, setting them on a path of lifelong success.
Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof and his wife, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheryl WuDunn, will headline the event, joined by special guests actress Brooke Shields and fashion photographer Nigel Barker.
In addition to the featured speakers and guests, Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels 10th Anniversary Gala will feature acclaimed authors Lucy Ferriss, author of the newly released novel A Sister to Honor; Rebecca Stead, author of Liar & Spy and When You Reach Me; Sarah Mlynowski, author of Whatever After and Magic in Manhattan; David C. Banks, author of SOAR: How Boys Learn, Succeed, and Develop Character; E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars; Matt de la Peña, author of Mexican WhiteBoy and We Were Here; Isabel Gillies, author of Starry Night and Happens Every Day; and Cynthia Weil, author of I’m Glad I Did.
“Jumpstart recruits and trains more than 960 volunteers to work with over 2,400 preschool children in the Tri-State region, helping them develop the language, literacy, and social-emotional skills needed to be successful in school. This growth is driven by the wonderful relationships formed between the children and college volunteers who implement Jumpstart’s program,” said Kerri Osborne, Regional Vice President of Jumpstart.
“Jumpstart helps close the achievement gap before it starts and inspires young adults in our communities to lead. We are incredibly grateful to Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn, our special guests, and our featured authors and supporters for building much needed awareness around the importance of high-quality early education. It is truly an honor to have so many prominent members of the literary community support Jumpstart’s vision for the future of early learning,” Osborne continued.
Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels is a unique fundraising event that celebrates the power of the written word while underscoring the importance of literature in children’s lives. This year, the gala will bring together 500 supporters and aims to raise more than $1.3 million in support of Jumpstart’s program in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Last year’s gala, held at Cipriani Wall Street, raised over $1.2 million.
