One hopes to never have to enter into divorce proceedings, pay an attorney for divorce-related services, and suffer the emotional anguish that accompanies most family law cases. But if divorce is an inevitability, it pays to have a solid understanding of the costs associated with the matter. In a new infographic that was recently released by The Law Offices of William J. Neary, a Connecticut-based firm, some of the costs associated with divorce have been graphically represented to give prospective clients a glimpse as to the costs associated with a typical divorce.
Interestingly, this visual aid starts off with a startling statistic – that in the year 2011, 2,118,000 couples got married, while 877,000 filed for divorce. The average cost of these divorces is discussed in the infographic, as well as the top eight factors that drive up the cost of individual divorce proceedings. Other interesting facts include the wide range of costs associated with court filing fees across the US and the cost of child support (hint: if you’re going to get divorced, Mississippi court filing fees amount to little more than you’d spend on a tank of gas, while Florida filing fees add up to a car payment on a nice sedan!). Finally, post-divorce costs are also represented, as they represent an expenditure that many couples fail to consider when budgeting for a divorce. To add a bit of levity to the entire infographic, the bottom section discusses the most expensive divorces in history – the perfect topic to put the average American’s divorce costs in perspective!
