New White Paper Examines the History and Value of Patient Advocacy in Healthcare

All voices matter – the patient advocate reminds us of that each and every day.

A new white paper by The Beryl Institute explores the role of the patient advocate and its relevance to the overall patient experience. Co-authored by three healthcare leaders who are patient advocates themselves, the paper, “Patient Advocate: A Critical Role in Patient Experience”, helps us understand the certain set of principles and shared values that are essential to maintaining balance of focus in healthcare organizations.

For this paper, patient advocates are identified as individuals employed by healthcare organizations with a commitment to ensuring patient voice is heard, yet they also represent the organization in which they are employed, its vision and strategy. In addition to providing considerations for action on the role of patient advocates in experience excellence, the paper discusses:

  •     History of Patient Advocacy
  •     Understanding the Patient Advocate Professional Role
  •     The Advocate’s Role in the Changing Healthcare Environment
  •     The Importance of the Patient Advocate Role

“The critical role of patient advocate is something we will always need in healthcare, and while they might evolve into larger strategic positions in patient experience or remain key players in an expanding experience function, I believe in full confidence, that this is a moment where patient advocates will again help frame the conversation for healthcare for the next 40 years to come and beyond,” said Jason Wolf, President of The Beryl Institute. “All voices matter – the patient advocate reminds us of that each and every day.”

Co-authors include:

  •     Kate Clarke, Manager, Patient Relations./Interpreter Services, Cadence Health
  •     Kim Pederson, Administrative Director, Patient Relations, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital
