Disaster Innovation Do Tank at the Tribeca Disaster Innovation Foundation’s First Ever Anti-Summit™
New York City, NY (PRWEB) April 19, 2015 -- On April 23, the Field Innovation Team (FIT) and the New York City Emergency Management Department (NYCEM) are bringing a Do-Tank on disaster innovation to New Yorkers and international participants. Titled “NYC Off the Grid”, this simulation will bring together Tribeca Film Festival goers, Relevents, the business community, representatives from NYCEM and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers, and FIT’s network of global disaster preparedness and emergency management experts from around the world.
NYC Off the Grid will thrust attendees into the whirlwind of chaos that characterizes the immediately post-disaster setting. It is within the cacophony that innovation must be used to shape response that best meets the needs of the community. The disaster of focus will be a solar storm-induced NYC-wide power outage, gearing the city up for preparedness to any disaster of great magnitude. This Do Tank will also demonstrate how innovation, fast prototyping, agile teams are being deployed in global disasters from Hurricane Sandy to the Boston Marathon Bombings to USA/Mexico border unaccompanied migrant minor crisis. The lessons learned have exponential impact for business, institutions and communities.
FIT brings together communities, government officials and innovators on the ground in disasters. “When we are not deployed in a disaster, we run preparedness events to empower future survivors with the skill sets to respond and recover", says Desiree Matel-Anderson, FIT Chief Wrangler. This event is one such disaster preparedness exercise focusing on showcasing the benefit of collaboration in the disaster space.
“Our goal at New York City Emergency Management is to make sure all New Yorkers are prepared for any type of emergency,” says Joseph Esposito, Commissioner of New York City Emergency Management. “We are happy to work with FIT, Relevents, and Tribeca Disaster Innovation Foundation to help bring an innovative look at emergency preparedness education through this Do-Tank exercise. It is important that every business and every family know the basics of preparedness, from making a plan to knowing how to contact their employees or loved ones, because winging it is not a viable option in cases of emergencies.”
The Anti-Summit™ is the perfect home for NYC Off the Grid. It is represents the intersection of innovation and preparedness, and it’s the perfect practice field for entrepreneurs, emergency managers, community organizers, and everyone in between who needs to be agile”, said Julie Anixter, Executive Editor of Innovation Excellence, a one of the Anti-Summit’s™ producers.
