Health care is quickly evolving due to the Affordable Care Act and other industry regulations. Consumers are faced with higher out of pocket costs and care providers are facing the likelihood of lower reimbursements. To help alleviate some of the pain, Goedfortune Inc. an Orlando, Florida based company decided that it was time to introduce a new model to the industry where consumers can shop for their health and medical care online. In January 2015 they launched BidClinic ( to enhance transparency, access, and affordability of care through a technology similar to that of eBay and Amazon.

BidClinic is an online marketplace where consumers can shop anonymously for health and medical services from participating care providers. The providers offer discounted and more affordable prices for their services if the consumers pay for it directly and avoid using their insurance. The consumer is provided with a variety of options to acquire the services; an auction style listing where one can bid or make an offer on a service and a product style listing where one can purchase a service directly for the price listed. When either type of transaction is completed the consumer and provider both receive a voucher from BidClinic with the details of the transaction. The consumer then takes the voucher to the provider upon their visit, receives care, and pays the price listed on the voucher.

Your Care, Your Price! That is the mantra of the team who operate BidClinic. The concept came about roughly two years ago while President and CEO Daniel Matthews was working at Orlando Health. After bouncing around the health care industry for about a decade Daniel thought that it would be easier if consumers and providers interacted directly and cut out all the middle men from the equation. He noticed that there were too many players involved in the process for acquiring care and this made it too complex for consumers to navigate health care. In addition, he noticed that transparency was lacking, access was limited, and care was unaffordable to many within the community. “Health care is not consumer friendly and it needs to be if it is to be accessible and affordable. When you look at other industries who faced similar difficulties in the past you see a pattern where they evolved through the adoption of new business models and technology. The health and medical communities need to follow that same pattern,” said Daniel.

As the cost of insurance premiums rise and subsequently the out of pocket costs for consumers it will be more difficult for individuals to acquire the care needed to stay healthy. Health insurance is good to have for major or catastrophic events, but for the everyday care needed to sustain a healthy lifestyle it will become too costly for consumers and they will utilize providers less. This coupled with the fact that a large amount of the population is still uninsured will mean that the problem only gets larger. Cost is a major barrier to care and many care providers have noticed that they have to look at different options to make it more affordable. In January when BidClinic launched, the executive team thought that it was going to be a difficult task to convince consumers that they could go online and shop for health care services directly from the providers. In addition, it would be an even more difficult task to change the mentality of providers who have not really changed the way they operate since the 1950’s. Since launching the solution, Goedfortune has encountered such difficulties but the company continues to make progress. Today they have many members and partnerships with providers who offer services in primary care, urgent care, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic, and orthopaedic surgery throughout the state of Florida. On today consumers can find; $39 to $99 doctor visits, $280 tooth extractions, $45 eye exams, $40 chiropractic consults, $7,550 ACL repair, and much more.

The company plans to build upon its current success and will be adding more features to their solution in the coming months. There will be a feature that allows consumers to anonymously post a request for a service and an appointment. Once the post is made it will be sent to providers to respond. This feature along with the existing one will address the needs of both insured and uninsured consumers and give providers the ability to better serve their communities. “We are improving transparency by providing an open book on service offerings and pricing across providers. We are improving access by establishing partnerships with all providers across the care continuum. Finally, we are improving affordability by working with our providers to establish discounted and other affordable care options for consumers,” Daniel explained.
