Lotus Blooms of Alexandria Hosts DC Young Survival Coalition Workshop for Women Living with Breast Cancer
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year. Thankfully, due to certain lifestyle changes, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Groups like YSC, the premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, offers a wonderful place of compassion and mental healing for those diagnosed and being treated for breast cancer. This past month YSC reached out to Lotus Blooms, a local education based adult boutique, to host a new type of event for its members.
One of the biggest side effects that women experience after breast cancer is sexual dysfunction or lack of interest in sex after treatment. The educators at Lotus Blooms organized an evening of learning how to regain their sexual self after cancer and tips and tools for improving discomfort and other personal issues. Women in their 20s to 40s came together to discuss their personal struggles with intimate relationships after diagnosis and treatment. The group discussed the effects of medication on hormones and talked about body image, confidence and empowerment. By the time the evening was over, the women had shared secrets, tears, laughs, and more about a personal topic that many people don’t have the opportunity or space to share. It was certainly a successful, empowering and amazing evening!
YSC and Lotus Blooms are now in discussions to make this a regular event, due to the overwhelming positive response. Stay up to date here for two upcoming workshops in May for YSC members—one focused on young, single women and the second focused on women in relationships.
