Department of Energy Raises Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) implements new energy efficiency regulation for air conditioning equipment. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) requirement is now increased from 13 to 14. SEER ratings measures total cooling output compared to total energy expended. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit. Essentially, a SEER rating applies to your air-conditioning like miles per gallon does to your car.
At Parker and Sons contends that the new SEER requirement will ultimately benefits the consumer. The higher SEER rating requirement will conserve energy, and thus, reduce monthly bills. Also, the price of outdated models with a SEER ratings below 14 will be reduced significantly. However, the average price for SEER 14 units will be slightly higher than SEER 13 units. Weighing the pros and cons of upgrading to a more efficient unit depends on each unique situation. But generally, a simple upgrade from a SEER 13 unit to a SEER 14 will save the homeowner money in the long run.
The new regulations from the DOE applies only to areas in the South and Southwest. The SEER requirement of 13 remains in the north, and east coast.
The federal regulation is geared more towards manufactures than consumers. The regulation assures that manufactures contribute to the preservation of the environment by producing energy conscious equipment.
Manufactures of AC units in the southwest have an 18-month grace period to deplete their inventory of SEER 13 units. This could benefit consumers, as manufactures are likely to discount SEER 13 units in order to move inventory before the 18 month grace period expires.
“The change in energy efficiency requirement was a longtime overdue. The technology has existed for quite some time and the older models consume energy much too fast. The SEER 14 regulation is as fair a policy as any, and consumers will ultimately reap the benefit,” said Chuck DeFrancisco, VP of air conditioning services.
