Diversified Machine Systems Teams Up with CU Boulder Students for Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Challenge
(PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- Diversified Machine Systems (DMS), a U.S.-based Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of 3 Axis CNC & 5 Axis CNC Routers and Large Format Machining Centers recently collaborated with a team of engineering students from the University of Colorado-Boulder in order to assist in the development of an eco-friendly vehicle in an effort to break records pertaining to vehicle fuel efficiency.
While brainstorming different types of materials that would make their vehicle the most fuel-efficient in driving the farthest distance using the least amount of energy, the students decided on extruded polystyrene, a rigid plastic foam commonly used in construction and engineering applications. A few team members brought the material to the DMS World Headquarters in Colorado Springs, where it was machined on one of the company's impressive 3 Axis CNC Routers. Using the extruded polystyrene, along with other materials such as carbon fiber and PETG plastic, the students designed and executed a high-efficiency vehicle run on gasoline. The team of engineering students, as well as another 5-person team from the university, traveled all the way to Detroit, Michigan in an effort to break records and compete against other student-designed vehicles at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Challenge.
A global competition that was started in 1985, this year marks the 9th anniversary of the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Challenge. Students from all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico and South America compete to build the most fuel-efficient car, which must travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. There are two different groups in which vehicles are categorized, gasoline or ethanol. The students had to race 7 laps around a .9 mile track, for a total of 6.3 miles. Shell then measures the vehicle's fuel consumes and the fuel efficiency is calculated based on that.
With more than 100 schools and over 144 teams competing in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Challenge, the gasoline team from the University of Colorado at Boulder took 8th place with 889 MPG.
