In conjunction with Earth Day, Integrity Waste is kicking off a new program that will help multi-tenant housing facilities in California comply with Assembly Bill 1826, which mandates the provision of composting programs in apartment communities.
An estimated 24% of the daily waste stream in apartment communities could be diverted from the landfills by composting. Diverting this waste from the landfills is becoming more crucial by the day, as landfills are filling up at an unsustainable speed. It is estimated that within the next 50 years, the majority of the landfills in California will have reached maximum capacity.
According to a 2010 survey by Apartments.com, 89% of apartment residents would prefer a “green” apartment community. And yet, most apartment communities in California are not currently optimizing their recycling programs by offering composting, and some still do not offer recycling at all. That will change in January 2016, when Assembly Bill 1826 takes effect, which mandates the recycling of organic waste at multi-tenant housing facilities in California.
