To understand the present, it is helpful to gaze into the mirror of the past.

PJ Media, LLC today announces the Freedom Academy’s® three interactive documentary series by celebrated historian and noted academic Victor Davis Hanson now available in the PJ Store. With vivid details and well- researched scholarship, Hanson brings to life the birth of Western Civilization.

“To understand the present, it is helpful to gaze into the mirror of the past,” said Hanson, Freedom Academy Director and the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in Residence in Classics and Military History at the Hoover Institute. “From Greek and Roman antiquity, through the events of World War II and on, history guides us and allows us to better understand the world today.”

Starting with “The Odyssey of Western Civilization” ($150), Hanson takes an in-depth look at the history of the Greek and Roman empires and explains how their successes set the stage for the British and American centuries that followed. This series of eight videos and eight companion e-books will guide you from ancient Greece and Rome, through the Dark Ages, the Renaissance and on to the post-modern West with stunning scholarship.

In “The Western Story” ($150), Hanson paints with broader – but no less vivid – strokes, condensing 2,500 years of history into eight easy-to-digest videos and eight companion e-books that transport academics and the intellectually curious alike to the birth of democracy on through modern times. The series explores the origins of Western military dynamism, how Judeo-Christian influences secured the survival of the West, and the corrosive – but ultimately impotent – effects of Western critics.

Finally, Hanson’s six-part series “World War II” ($150), explores the staggering enormity of a war that killed 50 million to 70 million people and permeates the past, present and future of Western Civilization. Hanson explains with great mastery the lead-up to the war, the global conflict itself and the aftermath, which is still felt to this day.

“Engaging scholarship and polished delivery combine with judicious multi-media that enrich rather than overwhelm the story,” said James Carafano, Freedom Academy Literary Panel Member and Vice President of Defense and Foreign Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation. “Three hours never seemed so short.”

The Freedom Academy also offers “World War II Part One: The Causes of World War II” ($9.99), which offers history buffs a laser-focused view of the impetus for the war, the agenda behind it and the depth of destruction it left in its wake.

In addition to his many academic appointments and distinctions, Hanson has led the Freedom Academy since its launch in 2013. The lecturer’s latest series for the Freedom Academy stands as a showcase of the origins of freedom and liberty for academics and armchair historians everywhere.

“Victor Davis Hanson‘s series is essential to understanding the big ideas with which our nation’s leaders are wrestling today,” said Scott Ott, host of the “Freedom’s Charter” series. “I highly recommend these series for hardcore history buffs and the intellectually curious alike.”
