This spring marks the beginning of construction for safety improvements along State Route 218, located in King George and Stafford Counties. Timmons Group’s traffic and transportation team conducted field reviews and safety assessments along 16.4 miles of the roadway, aimed to improve the frequency and possibility of run-off-the-road (ROR) crashes. This task is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Central Region on-call contract for traffic engineering services, and is expected to be complete this winter.

Route 218 connects suburban communities in Stafford County east of Fredericksburg with rural areas in northern and eastern King George County. Timmons Group’s team evaluated the two-lane winding roadway and performed guardrail assessment, curve testing, sign inventory and investigated large-diameter trees within the safety clear zone. A number of improvements were identified along the corridor and construction will include new signage, guardrail upgrades and selective tree removal.

Timmons Group has held an on-call term contract for traffic engineering services with VDOT’s Central Region (which includes the Richmond and Fredericksburg Districts) since 2011. During that period, the Timmons Group team has completed over 150 task orders for a variety of services including: corridor studies, intersection improvements, roundabout evaluations, design and review of traffic signals, guardrail evaluations, lighting studies, roadway safety improvements, and traffic engineering related studies and/or analyses.

Travelers can expect delays if traveling along the corridor due to the re-paving operations and tree removal.
