Melanoma Monday Prompts Month-Long Awareness Campaign

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology urge patients to get yearly skin exams for early Melanoma detection during skin cancer awareness month.

While melanoma is a scary form of cancer, it can be treated and cured if caught early enough.

This year, Melanoma Monday is May 4th. This day is dedicated to spreading awareness about skin cancer, including one of its most serious forms, melanoma. According to the Journal of American Medical Association, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. One person dies of melanoma every hour, but this statistic can be prevented with early detection. Monday, May 4th, starts a month long campaign for the awareness of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology are helping to spread awareness of the deadly disease by educating the general public about both prevention and early detection.

“While melanoma is a scary form of cancer, it can be treated and cured if caught early enough,” said Kenneth Katz, MD, dermatologist and founder of Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology.

In an effort to improve these numbers, Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology encourages everyone to regularly perform self-exams and schedule yearly skin exams. In addition, wearing orange on Monday, May 4, and getting screened for skin cancer, will help support the Academy of Dermatology’s vision of a world without skin cancer.

"Protecting your skin from sun damage using sunscreen, and being aware of any suspicious or changing moles, are the first steps in preventing melanoma," said Dr. Katz.

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Forefront Dermatology support Melanoma Monday and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. With a total of 54 dermatology clinics throughout the Midwest, in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Ohio, both are cutting edge dermatology practices with the latest advancement in detecting skin cancer.
