Horizons National Giving Day set for May 20, 2015
Norfolk, VA (PRWEB) May 05, 2015 -- Horizons Hampton Roads is joining a national one‐day, friendly competition among other affiliate programs across the country with a goal of raising $1 million in one day for funds that will be used to expand educational programs and bring services to more communities and families. May 20, 2015, is the first annual Horizons Giving Day when participating programs across the country will partner with local businesses, schools, and volunteers in a race to raise money and promote awareness through social media and online.
Horizons Hampton Roads delivers community‐centered educational programs working to close the opportunity gap for low‐income children in Kindergarten through 8th grade in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Each summer, Horizons students experience six‐weeks of academics, arts, S.T.E.M. and other programs to maintain and enhance reading and math skills.
“Low‐income students are six times more likely to drop out of high school,” says MaryAnne Dukas, Board Chair of Horizons Hampton Roads. “Horizons students build relationships with teachers and peers with a result that 96 percent of Horizons students go on to college or other post‐secondary training.”
Employees of Smithfield Foods are supporting the Horizons Giving Day by encouraging all employees to donate in exchange for a “Jeans Work Day” on the May 20th Giving Day. Horizons is inviting other businesses, schools, churches, and civic groups to gather or organize in support of Horizons Giving Day by sharing 15‐30 second video clips with #HorizonsGivingDay on social media that express why they support Horizons and rally others to go online to contribute to the cause. Pledges are encouraged starting May 1st through Horizons National Giving Day. All funds raised in Southeast Virginia will support the growth of Horizons Hampton Roads and stay local.
