Nation's largest electronic prior authorization (ePA) platform will use the ePA State Navigator to provide real-time solutions that dramatically improve patient access to medications requiring prior authorization.

186 million prescriptions per year are rejected at the pharmacy because prior authorization requirements have not been met.. Streamlining the medication PA process has become a priority in many states.

CoverMyMeds, the nation's largest electronic prior authorization (ePA) platform, has selected Point-of-Care Partners’ ePA State Navigator to help the company stay abreast of the rapidly-evolving ePA regulatory landscape. Point-of-Care Partners, a national health information technology (HIT) strategy and management consulting firm, launched the ePA State Navigator this year to simplify ePA regulatory compliance for stakeholders and to facilitate the adoption of electronic prior authorization for medications.

As conveyed in CoverMyMeds’ recently released ePA Adoption Scorecard, 186 million prescriptions per year are rejected at the pharmacy because prior authorization requirements have not been met.

“Pharmacies and prescribers often must backtrack to complete the prior authorization process, which can take days to weeks,” said Perry Lewis, Vice President of Industry Relations at CoverMyMeds. “CoverMyMeds is committed to improving patient access to medications through our real-time ePA solutions, and we rely upon the ePA State Navigator to ensure that our solutions are compliant with evolving state regulations.”

In many states, prior authorization laws and rules are formed by an overlapping web of government entities including insurance commissions as well as pharmacy boards. The ePA State Navigator allows stakeholders to readily understand the varied approaches that states are taking to address PA inefficiency, and it enables health IT vendors to be proactive in complying with rapidly evolving changes in the ePA ecosystem.

“Streamlining the medication PA process has become a priority in many states. Currently, 19 states have either mandated some form of medication ePA or have proposed mandates,” said Tony Schueth, CEO and Managing Partner at Point-of-Care Partners. “We are delighted to provide CoverMyMeds a resource that advances their mission to automate the medication prior authorization process, saving health care professionals valuable time and ensuring patients receive the medication they require, faster.”
