Greenberg Traurig’s Annapoorni Sankaran Receives APIS Champion of Diversity Award from State Bar Section
HOUSTON (PRWEB) May 01, 2015 -- Annapoorni Sankaran, a shareholder in the Houston office of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, has been honored with the 2015 Champion of Diversity Award by the Asian Pacific Interest Section (APIS) of the State Bar of Texas. The award is presented annually to lawyers who are instrumental in advancing diversity in the workplace and in the legal profession.
“We congratulate Anna on this well-deserved recognition,” said Douglas C. Atnipp, Texas co-regional operating shareholder and co-managing shareholder of the firm’s Houston office. “Anna’s dedication to diversity is evident by her work in the firm, various legal associations, and the State Bar.”
According to the APIS website, the section was created in 1995 and is a statewide umbrella organization that aims to promote the common professional interests of lawyers of and interested in Asian-Pacific American heritage, community, and culture.
Sankaran is a commercial litigator with a subspecialty in bankruptcy litigation. She handles trial and appellate matters before federal and state courts across the United States. Sankaran has wide-ranging experience with complex litigation and FCPA compliance matters.
A leader in the State Bar of Texas, Sankaran was appointed as minority director on the State Bar Board of Directors by Board President Trey Apffel in 2014. She is the first South Asian-American member on the board. Sankaran also serves on the Texas Minority Counsel Program (TMCP) Steering Committee, helping to shape goals and planning various aspects of TMCP, an annual client development, networking, and CLE event for diverse attorneys in Texas. This is her fourth consecutive year serving in this role.
In addition to her contributions to the State Bar, Sankaran is actively involved in local and national legal associations. She previously served as president of the South Asian Bar Association (SABA), one of six national affinity bar organizations in the United States, and is currently a national advisory council member. She helped launch and revitalize several local SABA chapters of the national organization, including the Austin, Dallas, Greater Boston, and Houston chapters. In recognition of her work, she received the SABA 2013 Cornerstone Award, and the SABA Greater Boston Annapoorni R. Sankaran Award for Excellence in Leadership and Service was created in her honor. Sankaran was named as one of the top “40 under 40” by the Houston Business Journal and the Boston Business Journal. She holds a J.D. and a B.A, cum laude, from Boston University.
