Community Event Aimed to Help Educate Families on Addiction and How to Find Help
Lafayette, LA (PRWEB) May 02, 2015 -- On April 25, 2015, Victory Addiction Recovery Center (Victory) held a free community event aimed at educating the public on the disease of addiction. Common questions people seek answers included, “Can we understand addiction in everyday terms? What are symptoms of the disease? How can I help someone who has the disease? Will it ever go away?” These questions and more were answered by local counselor Merril Thibodeaux, LAC. Merril's experience in the field of addiction spans over 26 years. He has worked with hundreds of people and their families over the years to combat the deadly disease of addiction.
Merril ended the event with this powerful quote from a concerned mother, Joan Ward, from Philadelphia who lost a young teenage son to addiction. "The world looks at our children and they see druggies, junkies, and felons. We look at our children and we see cowboy boots and ballet slippers, we see Christmas mornings and birthday parties. We hold forever in our hearts that first instant we looked into their eyes and knew in a heartbeat that we would give our very lives for them. We can learn more and understand better this awful disease, or we can continue to bury our children.”
Victory is committed to providing events like this to the community to educate and raise awareness of addiction and substance abuse. The goal is to eliminate the stigma associated with addiction so that those suffering are more likely to reach out for help and treatment.
