New tool generates personalized checklists to help patients prepare for doctor visits

The Medical Visit Checklist Builder guides patients through their appointments and improves communications with their doctors, helping them get the care they need.

Health AdvocateTM, Inc., the nation’s leading healthcare advocacy and assistance company and a subsidiary of West Corporation, today announced the launch of its new Medical Visit Checklist BuilderTM. This free, online tool enables members to create customized checklists with reminder questions in preparation for a wide range of doctor visits and other medical appointments.

“These checklists are a valuable resource for patients and can help people take a more active role in their healthcare, which is more important in today’s consumer-driven healthcare landscape than ever before,” said Martin Rosen, Executive Vice President, Health Advocate. “The Medical Visit Checklist Builder guides patients through their appointments and improves communications with their doctors, helping them get the care they need.”

For any number of reasons, patients too often return home following a medical appointment and realize they forgot to ask their provider an important question about their care or treatment. By answering a few short, confidential questions about an upcoming visit, the Medical Visit Checklist Builder generates a print-friendly checklist to take along to the appointment. This checklist can help ensure patients are better prepared for their visit, have a clear understanding of important topics related to their care and get the possible outcome.

Health Advocate members also have access to Personal Health Advocates, who can provide further decision support by helping members create a checklist, schedule an appointment or answer any questions they may have before an appointment, in addition to helping resolve a host of healthcare and insurance-related issues.

The checklists are customized to the user’s needs and include questions and tips specific to the type of visit, including, but not limited to:

  •     Routine checkups and follow-up visits
  •     Alzheimer’s/dementia care
  •     Second opinions
  •     Hospital stay and surgery preparation
  •     Diagnostic test/procedure

Further, studies show patients may forget up to 80 percent of information that is discussed during their visit, so the checklists also provide a space where patients can write down information discussed with the doctor to improve retention.

The Medical Visit Checklist Builder was created by a team of experienced Health Advocate medical doctors and designed by the company’s marketing team to ensure that each checklist is comprehensive, accurate and beneficial to users. This new tool is available via Health Advocate’s secure member website at no cost to Health Advocate members.
