(RISE:NYC) Resiliency Innovations for a Stronger Economy is a New York City Economic Development Corporation competition designed to seek out promising resiliency technologies to help small businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy prepare for future storms, sea level rise, and other effects of climate change, while strengthening New York City's long-term resiliency efforts. Due to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the need to protect NYC small businesses from damage caused by future storms is vital. With 30 million dollars in a federal grant available, winners were eligible to receive funding to implement their resiliency technologies to Hurricane Sandy impacted small businesses across the five boroughs. With over 200 applicants worldwide, F. William Brown LLC's proposal was one of eleven selected to win this prestigious award. Their winning proposal was based on an industry leading ability to prevent flood damage to city buildings using patented SPS flood barriers.
"RISE:NYC is part of the City's comprehensive suite of initiatives to mitigate the effects of severe weather and climate change on New Yorkers, and all of the winning technologies will help support and strengthen small businesses across the City," said NYCEDC President Kyle Kimball. "Each of the 11 innovative winning technologies will make the City a safer, stronger and more resilient place, creating economic support and additional opportunities for New Yorkers and small businesses."

"One aspect of the competition that I was most intrigued by was meeting with small business owners who were impacted by Sandy and listening to their stories. Their ability to rebound from the devastation the storm caused was definitely inspiring. Our ability to now help protect some of these business and building owners due to being awarded funding from RISE:NYC is something we are looking forward to and very proud of," said Russ Ellington, Business Development Manager for F William Brown LLC, who was instrumental in putting the winning proposal together.
F William Brown, LLC teamed up with leading Architects, Engineers and Flood Panel LLC to offer dry flood proofing of commercial and high rise residential buildings. Their method follows standards set forth in FEMA Technical Bulletin 3-93. It is their team approach that separates them from all other flood barrier competitors. By dry flood proofing to these standards, it will ensure a building will suffer minimal flooding, be able to withstand the hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressures against it as well as realize a reduction in flood insurance premiums.
