U-T San Diego Names Distinguished Veteran Bryan M. Smylie as Director of Military Liaison
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 05, 2015 -- U-T San Diego proudly announced that it has named Bryan M. Smylie, a distinguished Marine Corps veteran, as the organization’s new director of military liaison.
Working with the U-T’s Circulation and Advertising Sales divisions, Smylie will develop key relationships with military vendors, suppliers and organizations. He will also focus his efforts on further solidifying the U-T’s outstanding reputation within the military community.
“The director of military liaison role is extremely important and influential, and we recognize that it could only be filled by an individual with superior military credentials, a stellar reputation, and deep institutional knowledge of all branches of the service,” said Jeff Light, U-T San Diego’s president and editor. “Bryan’s hiring represents the culmination of this long-term strategy. We are confident that he will excel in all of his objectives, as we seek to grow our subscriber base and increase advertising opportunities within the military community.”
Prior to joining the U-T, Smylie served as chief of staff for strategic plans, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, for the United States Marine Corps in San Diego. During this assignment, he had responsibility for strategic planning for 17,000 personnel, 450 aircraft, including the development of attendant business plans.
Smylie’s illustrious career includes multiple awards, including two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, and the Boeing Rescue Award. He was also hand-picked as both Presidential Helicopter Pilot and Presidential Helicopter Advance Officer, for the president and vice president of the United States. In addition, Smylie has more than 20 years of experience managing all aspects of professional education and leadership development, and has Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training.
“I am pleased to be part of the U-T team,” said Smylie, who holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from Western Michigan University and recently retired after a 20-year career in the Marine Corps. “I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues to enhance our support for San Diego’s vast military community.”
