Safway Crew Achieves 2,000 Man-hours with Zero Recordables
WAUKESHA, Wis. (PRWEB) May 11, 2015 -- Safway’s Charleston Branch, which provides scaffold access services at the Nucor Steel Berkeley facility in Charleston, S.C., has been awarded the NUCOR Steel Berkeley Star Safety Performance Award in recognition of 2,000 man-hours of work performed during the 2014 year, with zero recordable incidents. The Safway crew was one of seven contractors that received the award at the 10th annual Contractor Safety Summit, hosted by NUCOR Steel Berkeley, in February 2015.
“I want to extend many thanks to Scott Beltz, our construction manager,” says Charleston Sales Rep Sonny George. “We couldn’t have accomplished this without his excellent customer service skills and his ability to assemble crews quickly.”
Safway worked with the steel company intermittently for approximately 45 weeks in 2014, erecting and dismantling scaffold on an as-needed basis. Often, the facility would not know in advance when a scaffold crew would be needed, so Safway’s skilled laborers had to be ready to work at the facility with only a 24-hour notice.
“Due to the nature of work, we did not always have advance notice when a crew would be needed,” states Charleston Branch Manager Bill Johnson. “With no site-specific crew designated to work at the facility, all Safway Charleston laborers had to undergo special, site-specific safety training to be qualified to work in the steel facility. Safety is always our number one priority. We wanted to ensure that whenever NUCOR needed assistance, even on short notice, we would always have a properly trained crew ready to meet their needs.”
“We are really proud to receive this award,” adds Johnson. “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication to safety displayed by our employees. We look forward to continuing to serve NUCOR and striving to achieve another year of zero incidents.”
With over 200 operating facilities, NUCOR is North America’s largest steel manufacturer with a production capacity exceeding 27 million tons. A Fortune 500 company, with more than 22,000 employees, NUCOR is also America’s largest steel recycler.
