Elasto Proxy, a manufacturer of custom EMI gaskets, is announcing resources for defense industry buyers who need to source EMI shielding. In a new article and video, the gasket fabricator explains how water jet cutting supports the cost-effective conversion of particle-filled silicones into EMI gaskets for projects such as military touchscreens, electronic enclosures, and communications equipment.
Shielding Silicones and Water Jet Cutting
Silicone rubbers are synthetic elastomers with useful material properties over a wide range of temperatures. By filling silicones with metal- or metal-coated particles, compounders create materials that conduct electricity and resist electromagnetic interference (EMI). Elasto Proxy recommends particle-filled silicones to military buyers, and then uses water jet cutting to create EMI gaskets for them.
As Elasto Proxy’s technical article explains, water jet cutting eliminates tooling costs and supports short lead times. The fine, fast cuts that the company’s water jet cutting machine makes provide smooth edges and exact 90-degree angles. Water jet cutting does not put excessive pressure on profiles, but military buyers can choose shielding silicones that are reinforced with conductive fabric or metal mesh.
