Loyola Marymount and ATRS Recycling "Clothes the Loop" to Support Nepal Disaster Relief
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 11, 2015 -- A unique collaboration between a Southern California university, a local business and an Orange County based charity has helped to provide much needed support to victims of the Nepal Earthquake disaster.
Trish Carlson, Director of Conference & Events Services of the Loyola Marymount University contacted Chino Hills based American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS) to pick up and recycle several palettes of surplus blankets left after being stored for miscellaneous events near the Los Angeles campus.
Fonta Stravropoulos, Market Team Manager for ATRS took one look at the blankets and suddenly had an idea. The blankets were in good condition and he wondered if they could support disaster relief in Nepal, which he had been following on local news. He immediately contacted Giving Children Hope, a Buena Park based non profit organization with a global mission to serve vulnerable children and families.
ATRS manages a year-round Clothing & Shoe Recycling program in partnership with GCH that supports "We've Got Your Back," a school nutrition program feeding approximately 5,000 hungry students in Southern California and reaches out worldwide when tragedy strikes.
Nepal was devastated on Sunday, April 25th by an earthquake with 7.8 magnitude outside of its capital city, Kathmandu. The city is home to 3 million Nepali citizens: women, men children and families. Giving Children Hope was one of several first responders to provide much needed supplies from its donated inventory for Nepali residents that were left homeless and devastated by this natural disaster.
According to Sean Lawrence, Executive Director of GCH, blankets have been one of the most requested items from the field:
"These blankets will be an incredible blessing to those we are serving in Nepal. They will provide warmth for years to come to those who have lost their housing.”
ATRS picked up the palettes of blankets from Loyola Marymount University and enlisted employees, friends and family to fold and package them up for transportation to Nepal. They were delivered to Giving Children Hope on May 8. Over the next few weeks they will be sent to Nepal in shipping containers along with dehydrated foods and hygiene products to serve local shelters housing victims of the earthquake.
