Today the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) released a new book featuring digital age strategies for engaging the reluctant reader. Authored by veteran educator, L. Robert Furman, Technology, Reading & Digital Literacy: Strategies to Engage the Reluctant Reader is designed to help educators inspire and motivate students to discover the joys of reading, improve writing and storytelling skills, and expand the use of technology for learning.

Filled with resources for making the transition to digital literacy, the book shows educators how to connect traditional teaching strategies with engaging online tools. It features strategies for using virtual book clubs; video and animated book talks; and writer’s wikis to boost digital literacy for students of all ages, helping them become creators, innovators and out-of-the-box thinkers. In addition, the book highlights educational websites that help students find books that match their interests and abilities; discuss their reading with their classmates; share a great story with peers around the globe; or improve their writing skills.

“Technology can help our students find that love of reading where they might not with the new technologies,” said Furman.

Furman will present an overview of the strategies featured in the book in a session, “Be Engaged: Motivating the Reluctant Reader Using Technology,” at ISTE 2015 in Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 1, from 11:45 am-12:45 pm.

An educator for more than 20 years, Furman is an educational blogger for The Huffington Post and the author of Instructional Technology Tools: A Professional Development Plan and Reading, Technology, and Digital Literacy, also an ISTE book. His research interests include parental self-efficacy in student academic achievement, the use of technology to increase administrative efficiency and Leadership in urban areas.
