Opening a stand up paddleboard business in Oklahoma was definitely a risky move, and finding a location that didn't have high winds and murky waters was key into getting SUP going here. After three seasons, Flat Tide has found "home" in the beautiful, near 80 mile long, North Canadian river off of Lake Overholser. What better way to check out the miles and miles of river than to bask in the beautiful sun, spend time with your friends, enjoy the water, and get a little exercise in all at the same time. SUP is the fastest growing sport in the world, my guess is because it can be as intense, or as chill as you like it.
There are more fitness and yoga instructors booking for this upcoming season than ever before. SUP Yoga and SUP Bootcamp are just a few of the styles of fitness being practiced on the water today. The SUP Bootcamp is an all levels intense cardio burning class that involves push ups, squats, mountain climbers, burpees... all while floating on the water. What an amazing way to add another dimension to your workout. Trainer Melissa Cox from the Shape Project uses "high intensity training paired with body weight moves on the board to challenge your body from every possible angle".
With SUP Yoga, it's pulling students out of the studios and back into nature. Balance on the water creates symmetry (that one may not have noticed was needed). Floating will force students to engage their core, taking a simple pose and increasing it's difficulty. It will invigorate and empower, while giving a unique perspective on the horizon. Nothing can compare to the quiet ripple of the waves, it will key students into their breath, the most important part of yoga.
For most interested in SUP, a cooler and a hammock are more their speed, they can spend the day basking in the sun and hanging out with friends or family. It's the perfect pastime, stand up paddleboarding bridges the gap between young and old, families and singles. It's fun, easy to learn, and a great way to meet new friends.
Flat Tide boasts one of the largest SUP rental fleets in the world, and operates out of a funky little truck off the historic Route 66 Bridge on Lake Overholser (approximately 3901 East Overholser Drive Bethany, OK). Come celebrate their third season with them!
