“Most of us dream of flying as children, it’s a dream I never gave up.” Mike Abernathy

CloudStreet: Soaring The American West follows four glider pilots as they soar high above the western United States. Using specially developed aerial video techniques, this program puts the viewer in the cockpit of a glider, miles above sea level. This unique perspective gives viewers the thrill of flying above the rugged and dramatic beauty of the American West.
Viewers will hear from the pilots about the experience of flying vast distances using only the energy of the atmosphere to stay aloft. The pilots’ love of soaring is inspirational as they balance the danger of motor-less aircraft with the joy and freedom of flying.
Filmmaker and pilot Mike Abernathy notes, “Most of us dream of flying as children; it’s a dream I never gave up. The beauty and serenity of soaring is impossible to describe and I wanted to share the experience from the pilot seat.”
While following the pilots cross-country, CloudStreet explores the science of cloud formation, which is key to soaring. The filmmakers used elegant time-lapse photography to show the development of “cloud streets” which are essential to long glider flights.
The director Matthew Murray notes, “The challenges of filming gliders are numerous. We battled rain, lighting, hail, and wildfire smoke. And we had to develop camera platforms for airplanes that fly without engines. It was an amazing adventure and the results are spectacular.”
The film is accompanied by an original score by composers Matthew Pavolaitis and Colleen Grace (iTunes) and narrated by Dave Pettitt.
CloudStreet was supported in part by funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Soaring Society of America, and Stemme AG.
CloudStreet will be made available via PBS New Mexico to all public television stations beginning on May 20. The film will be available on Blu-Ray/DVD and as a digital download on May 27, 2015 (Amazon and iTunes).
