The forum takes place Wednesday, May 20, in Costa Mesa, California.
Jeffrey K. Joyner, shareholder in the firm’s Los Angeles office, is a conference co-chair for the second consecutive year and will moderate the panel, “Avoiding and Resolving Patent Disputes: Structuring a Game Plan for Licensing, Legislation, Business Partnerships, and More.” James J. DeCarlo, shareholder in the New Jersey and New York offices, will speak on the panel, ”Patent Trial Best Practices: Judge and Bar Perspectives,” E. Patrick Ellisen, shareholder in the Silicon Valley office, will present on the panel, “Avoiding and Resolving Patent Disputes: Structuring a Game Plan for Licensing, Legislation, Business Partnerships, and More,” and Rene Treviño, of counsel in the Houston office, will present on the panel, “Patent Trial Best Practices from the Bar & Bench: A Keynote Conversation with The Honorable Marilyn L. Joyner represents Fortune 500 international and domestic companies in patent, trademark, and copyright litigation, including serving as lead trial counsel. His focus includes both the enforcement of intellectual property rights against competitors and licensees as well as the defense of companies in large joint defense groups. Joyner has achieved judgments exceeding $300 million for international companies and also invalidated patents that patent monetization entities had asserted against his clients. He has been lead trial counsel in jurisdictions throughout the United States, such as the Eastern District of Texas, District of Delaware, and Northern and Central Districts of California, with respect to many technologies ranging from interactive website interactive technologies to medical devices and from game devices to plastics. Joyner is also a member of Greenberg Traurig’s Government Law & Policy Practice Group where he focuses on legislation, regulations, and government agencies related to intellectual property, infrastructure, transportation, energy, water, emerging technologies, and entertainment. He serves on the leadership council of the Los Angeles CleanTech Incubator and on the boards of the Westside Music Foundation and Seven Arrows School. He is co-chair of the e4Mobility Alliance for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.
DeCarlo, a registered patent attorney and electrical engineer, is actively involved in virtually all aspects of intellectual property counseling. His experience includes litigating patent matters in District Courts around the country, handling matters before the PTAB, counseling clients on the strategic use and management of intellectual property assets, and drafting infringement, validity, and freedom to operate opinions. DeCarlo also counsels clients on the drafting and negotiating of complex technology agreements and directs the prosecution of patent applications in areas such as electronic commerce, cloud computing, virtual and augmented reality, streaming media, Internet search engines, search advertising, client/server systems, mobile and land based telecommunications, and computer software and hardware. In addition, his matters have covered other wide-ranging technology areas including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, semiconductors, fiber optics, cameras, manufacturing, toys, pulp and paper, steel production, electronics, and electro-mechanical devices.
Ellisen focuses his practice on intellectual property protection, counseling, and enforcement. He has wide-ranging experience in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters. He regularly advises clients on intellectual property strategies and systems, and negotiates and litigates intellectual property license agreements. Ellisen is a frequent lecturer on intellectual property management and best practices. He has broad experience handling various types of intellectual property disputes, including patent infringement actions in the U.S. District Courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Treviño focuses his practice on patent litigation involving a wide-range of technologies, including computer hardware and software, cellular devices, medical devices, and pharmaceutical products in federal district courts across the country, including the Eastern District of Texas. Treviño also represents clients before the Supreme Court of the United States and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Fifth Circuit. Prior to his legal career, Rene served as a law clerk for the Hon. Leonard E. Davis, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas (Tyler/Marshall Divisions), which provided him with invaluable insight in to practicing in one of the busiest patent law dockets in the country. Prior to law school, Treviño spent four years as a software engineer at IBM Corp. in Austin, Texas.
