Mashable Announces Marcus Gilmer as its West Coast Assistant Real-Time News Editor
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 20, 2015 -- Mashable, the leading media company for the digital generation, announced today it has hired Marcus Gilmer as its West Coast Assistant Real-Time News Editor. In this role, Gilmer will support Mashable’s growing Real-Time News desk in its efforts to utilize social media and new technologies to cover breaking news and developing stories for Mashable and its owned channels and social networks.
The Real-Time News desk uses digital tools, emerging platforms and data to disseminate and aggregate content to strengthen Mashable’s around-the-clock global news coverage of unfolding events. He will work closely with Mashable’s global editorial, social media and audience development teams.
Mashable has long looked to its social community as a means of content distribution. Boasting 42 million monthly unique visitors and over 22 million social followers across platforms, Mashable aims to use its social accounts to directly engage and interact with its global audience.
“Our editorial philosophy is built on the idea of embracing innovation, and we have always believed in reaching our audience where it lives,” said Jim Roberts, Chief Content Officer and Executive Editor. “Marcus’s role on the West Coast will help us reach a bigger audience across more platforms while broadening our news coverage 24/7.”
Gilmer joins Mashable from the San Francisco Chronicle where he served as Newsroom Social Media Manager. While there, he helped manage the Chronicle’s main social media channels, produced stories for SFGate.com and trained the newsroom on social media best practices. Prior to that, he was Digital Editor of Chicago Sun-Times where he supported coverage of national live events and breaking news, leveraging video, live-Tweet coverage, live chats and live blogs.
Previously, he was also an Associate Editor at The A.V. Club and Editor in Chief of Chicagoist.com.
An Alabama native, Gilmer earned his BA from Birmingham-Southern College and received his MFA in Communications from the University of New Orleans.
Beginning in June, Gilmer will be based in Mashable’s San Francisco office. He can be found on Twitter at @marcusgilmer.
