The Baltimore Ravens have a stunning field by Shaw Sports Turf, so we figured that it has to be as good as or better than any other synthetic turf field we could purchase.

The facility, which is near completion, was started in June of 2014 by W.M. Jordan Company.
Inclement weather in Virginia often limits practice times for many sports. Virginia Tech’s new indoor facility will serve male and female student-athletes from multiple sports upon completion. In addition to football, other squads that can utilize the facility may include men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse, softball and baseball.
The building is 210 feet wide, 400 feet long, and 85 feet high. There are eight-foot padded walls, wide-sidelines, full scoreboard and 40-second clocks on each end to allow the football team to have full-contact scrimmage, including punting and kicking footballs. The facility will possess stadium lighting both inside and outside. The outside lighting will allow the football team to practice on its outdoor fields late into the evening. None of this is possible in the current indoor facility, Rector Field House.
The Senior Associate Athletics Director of Facilities and Operations, Tom Gabbard, is excited about the partnership with Shaw Sports Turf.
“The turf is beautiful and the installation has gone extremely well,” he said. “We wanted a field that had been scientifically tested, and we know that Shaw Sports Turf takes pride in the research and development of their products. The Baltimore Ravens have a stunning field by Shaw Sports Turf, so we figured that it has to be as good as or better than any other synthetic turf field we could purchase.”
“It has been a joy to do this project with Virginia Tech University and W.M. Jordan Company,” said Andrew Barksdale, Shaw Sports Turf Territory Manager. “The communication and coordination of the project by all parties was the reason things have turned out so well. I’m glad that we can provide a great field to a great university.”
The field will feature Shaw Sports Turf’s Momentum system. Fast, dense and firm, Momentum is a high-performance synthetic turf system designed with Strenexe fiber, a proven slit film technology. In addition to its durability and performance benefits, Momentum’s fiber construction results in an umbrella effect that helps hold infill and reduce overall fly-out.
Hokie Fans and the Home Club Development Office have made this $21.3 million project possible through their outstanding fund raising efforts.
“Our fans are what makes things like this happen, when it needs to happen. We needed this facility, and they stepped up and provided the funds and support. We couldn’t do it without our fans,” said Gabbard.
The first use of the new facility and 85,102 square foot Shaw Sports Turf field will be for pre-season football practice in August.
