IMU Southwest, The Immunization Clinic Announces Discounted Meningitis Shots for Graduating Seniors
Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 25, 2015 -- STAFFORD, TX – IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic, a Houston-area testing and immunization clinic, has recently announced that it will be providing meningitis immunizations for graduating high school seniors. IMU Southwest, at the west and southwest clinics, will help high school seniors that need meningitis immunizations as a part of their college admissions.
The Importance of Meningitis Vaccinations
Bacterial meningitis is a disease that has potential deadly consequences. There are three strains of the meningococcal bacteria (known as serogroups) that are responsible for the disease in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC. Immunization programs, such as those provided by IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic, are recommended to stop further spread of the disease. The three serogroups are classified as meningitis B, C and Y.
Meningitis strikes approximately 3,000 Americans annually. Of these cases, 100-125 are on college campuses, leading to the deaths of 5-15 students a year. Individuals that are not properly immunized but survive the effects of the disease may suffer long-term, debilitating health problems or disabilities.
Offering Onsite Mobile Clinic Services or Appointments to Comply with Requirement
IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic offers discounted meningitis immunizations for graduating seniors. In the past month alone IMU Southwest held five mobile clinics at local high schools, providing over 1,100 vaccines. The cost of the vaccines is $115. IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic also offers a $22 vaccine for those that are 18 years old and under and meet financial qualifications.
In addition to providing no appointment, walk in mobile clinics for the convenience of those in need of a meningitis vaccination, IMU Southwest also offers vaccinations at its Southwest and West locations.
Other Services Provided by IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic
IMU Southwest The Immunization Clinic offers the Trumenba vaccine for meningitis B. This FDA approved treatment is used for people 10-25 years of age as a 32-dose series. Although there is no routine recommendation for serogroup B meningococcal vaccines at this time, physicians can use these vaccines for people 10-25 years of age, consistent with the labeled indication. Many colleges in Northeastern and Northwestern states where the outbreaks have occurred now require this vaccine in addition to the current MCV4 vaccine.
