For the first time in some time, the New York Rangers are at the top of the Eastern Conference. One of the original franchises in the National Hockey League has had its share of ups and downs over the years, but the excitement level for this season has been off the charts. Their fans have gotten behind their favorite team and they are just a few more wins from advancing past the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals and into the Stanley Cup Finals. Through the first two games of the series, each team has won a game and both have had moments where they looked unstoppable and where they looked like they wouldn’t win another game.
The New York Rangers advanced to the playoffs after earning the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a 53-22-7 record, which was good enough for 113 points – the most in the NHL. In the opening round of the series, the Rangers knocked off the Pittsburgh Penguins and their star player Sidney Crosby in five games and followed that up by beating the Washington Capitals in seven games. In that series, they eliminated another superstar, Alex Ovechkin, who had promised victory prior to the seventh game.
For the Tampa Bay Lightning, their path to the Stanley Cup playoffs began after finishing the regular season with a 50-24-8 record, good for second in the Atlantic Division with 108 points, trailing only the Montreal Canadiens. In the opening round, the Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings in seven games. They followed that series win up with a win in six games against the Atlantic Division-winning Canadiens. Their wins in these series helped prepare them for their current series with the Rangers.
Games one and two were played at the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. In game two, the Rangers were embarrassed on their home ice, 6-2. The Garden will also be the home of game five and, if necessary, would be the site of another seventh game. The games in Tampa Bay will be played at Amalie Arena, the home of the Lightning since it opened in 1996. The venue will host games three and four and if the series reaches six games, will get the chance to host another. The Lightning will be looking to hang their second Stanley Cup banner (2003-04) here while the Rangers will look to get their fifth banner and first since 1993-94.
