Summer Fun and NMEDA Mobility Solutions: Tips for Making Room for the Family in Your Vehicle
Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) May 24, 2015 -- Summer is here, and for people with large families, their vehicle may not seem big enough during this time of year. This is especially true for those who prefer transferring out of their wheelchair while riding or driving in their vehicle. Here are some carrier options available for storing wheelchairs, in order to create more room for luggage and family.
For a manual wheelchair, and a smaller car such as a sedan, one option is the automatic car-top carrier. Activated by a switch, this carrier has a steel pin that lowers and picks up the wheelchair. The chair folds as it rises and the carrier closes, keeping the wheelchair safe atop the vehicle until it reaches its destination. There are different sizes and weights for car-top carriers, depending on the wheelchair and vehicle. A local NMEDA/QAP member dealer will be able to examine the car to determine if it is suitable for a car-top carrier.
For a larger vehicle and larger electric wheelchair, the best option is a hitch-mounted wheelchair carrier. These carriers attach onto the back of the car as a hitch. They conveniently tilt down to load the wheelchair before tilting up to lock it into place.
There are other carriers available such as pick up truck carriers and bumper mounted carriers. Get it in gear and visit a local NMEDA/QAP member today to learn more about creating space in your vehicle.
