The Car2Car Communication Consortium organized, for the first time, Positioning and Timing (POTI) tests as part of its conformance assessment activities. These tests were hosted by TASS International and held in Helmond, The Netherlands on March 17th-27th 2015 during the ETSI 4th ITS Cooperative Mobility Services plugtest event. TASS International test equipment streamed GNSS and CAN-bus signals, pre-recorded during live driving, for testing Dead-Reckoning (DR) in multiple scenarios: Open sky, half-open sky, city, tunnel, forest and reverse. STMicroelectronics’ Teseo II receiver, integrated with Autotalks’ chipset, CRATON V2X communication processor and PLUTON V2X RF transceiver, was the first to attend and complete the POTI tests.
In Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication, accurate and timely positioning is essential for reliable safety applications. Inaccurate or outdated positioning may trigger distracting and even dangerous false alarms that may severely affect driver's behavior, or as important, fail to trigger true alarms. Therefore, the positioning solution must be reliable even in demanding conditions, where the vehicle is moving at high speed, maneuvering, and reaching a GNSS-unfriendly environment like urban canyons, forests, parking garages, and tunnels.
The excellent collaboration between STMicroelectronics (ST) and Autotalks was instrumental in the success of their high-end V2X positioning solution. A product of the joint effort, the ST-Autotalks solution provides a comprehensive integration with vehicle sensors.
The streamed input data by TASS, used for the tests, emulated prolonged driving under realistic and diverse challenging scenarios, while considering real-life sensor limitations. Results were compared with high-quality ground truth reference data provided by TASS as well. The superb performance of the Teseo II multi-constellation true 10Hz-positioning-fixes GNSS receiver, combined with dead-reckoning algorithm, exhibited clear benefits relative to plain GNSS positioning.
