April Employment Growth Up by 162 percent over March
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 28, 2015 -- The Economic Situation report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, May 8, revealed a growth of 223,000 jobs in April, an increase of 138,000 jobs over March’s monthly employment growth.
April’s job growth marks an increase of 162 percent over March’s revised employment growth of 85,000 jobs, but a 16 percent decrease over February’s growth of 266,000 jobs. Last month’s job growth is also 32 percent less than April 2014.
April’s unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons were essentially unchanged at 5.4 percent and and 8.5 million, respectively. Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons were down by 0.8 percentage point and 1.1 million.
Job gains primarily occurred in professional and business services, health care and construction while mining employment continued to decline.
Employment in professional and business services added 62,000 jobs last month, above both the 3-month average gain of 35,000 jobs and last year’s monthly average of 59,000 jobs. Within the supersector, services to buildings and dwellings added 16,000 jobs, followed by computer systems design and related services which added 9,000 jobs. Business support services, and management and technical consulting services added 7,000 and 6,000 jobs, respectively.
The health care and construction industry both added 45,000 jobs last month. Within the health care industry, job growth was distributed among ambulatory health care services (+25,000), hospitals (+12,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+8,000). Construction’s growth was concentrated in specialty trade contractors (+41,000) with employment gains evenly
split between the residential and nonresidential components.
Employment in mining declined by 15,000 jobs in April, mostly as a result of losses in support activities for mining and oil and gas extraction. Since the beginning of the year, the industry has lost 49,000 jobs.
Employment in other major industries, including manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, information, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government, showed little change
over the month.
After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of February and March were revised from 264,000 to 266,000 jobs, and 126,000 to 85,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in February and March combined were 39,000 lower than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 191,000 per month.
