For the past few years, 8Bit games have started stealing the limelight back from high budget 3D productions. Some recent examples include Minecraft, FTL, Tiny Tower, Halcyon 6 and Kairosoft.
What's the driving force behind this movement? How can these indie companies compete with large publishers?
A look at the recently launched active Kickstarter campaign: Pixel Starships to sheds light this trend.
Pixel Starships developer SavySoda says: "The ultimate judge of popularity for a game is if players find the concept fun and can associate with it enough to commit time and money."
SavySoda has launched its project on KickStarter to gain support from backers who love indie strategy games. As reward, backers will receive exclusive in game content, opportunities to collaborate with the developer and free limited edition merchandise. Many backers also get early access to the game months before release. The money raised from the campaign then goes to further development of the game. It's a win-win situation.
Anyone can back as little as one US Dollar to join the project. Backers enjoy direct access to the developer way before the game hits the stores. Within the first two days, Pixel Starships has already raised over 4.5k on Kickstarter.
Pixel Starships also takes traditional 8Bit Retro games to the next step by setting in a Massive Multiplayer Environment similar to World of Warcraft. This has not been done before for an 8Bit Sci-Fi Manager game.
