Final Special Agents of Change Webinar Explores New Approach to Helping Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (PRWEB) June 02, 2015 -- To date, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been portrayed as a checklist of deficits: difficulties interacting with others, sensory challenges, and repetitive — sometimes disruptive — behaviors, and therapy has focused on eliminating these “autistic” symptoms. However, a new groundbreaking approach called the “Uniquely Human” perspective was created to improve the long-term outcomes of students with ASD. PresenceLearning is bringing this new approach to parents, teachers and special educators in a new webinar, “Uniquely Human: A Different Way to See Autism and Create Pathways to Success,” presented by one of the world’s leading authorities on autism, Dr. Barry Prizant.
The 90-minute webinar on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 10 AM Pacific time (1 PM Eastern Time) will feature research, stories and advice based on Dr. Prizant’s countless experiences with families and children with autism, and his forthcoming book, “Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism” (Simon & Schuster, August, 2015). Kirkus Reviews has awarded “Uniquely Human” a Starred review, referring to it as “A truly impactful, necessary book”. This is the fifth and final webinar in the Special Agents of Change webinar series. By participating in this webinar, attendees will:
● Understand stereotypes and misunderstandings of the behavior of children with ASD and how to move away from these using a more accurate, evidence-based view.
● Examine experiences and address the concerns of parents of children with ASD in order to build collaborative and trusting relationships.
● Debunk common beliefs about negatives associated with ASD and understand why many commonly used approaches do not result in the best long-term outcomes.
● Apply the “Uniquely Human” perspective to reform educational practices and help school communities be more responsive to the needs of children with ASD and their families.
