Ball Janik LLP Opens Utah Offices with Addition of Richards, Kimble & Winn, P.C.

Attorneys John D. Richards III, Curtis G. Kimble, and Matthew J. Winn (of the law firm Richards, Kimble & Winn, P.C.) have joined Ball Janik LLP effective June 1, 2015. Mr. Richards has been named Managing Partner of Ball Janik LLP’s Utah offices in Salt Lake City and St. George. Ball Janik LLP welcomes its new lawyers and is excited to serve Utah and the Intermountain states, and will continue to serve community associations under Mr. Richards’ leadership. The firm’s Utah offices will focus on general counsel and collection services for community associations, while expanding its services to include real estate, construction and construction defect litigation, corporate, financial services, commercial litigation, and insurance recovery including bad-faith litigation.

John D. Richards III, who founded Richards Kimble & Winn, P.C., will serve as managing partner of Ball Janik’s new Utah offices. Richards and his partners built their law firm by serving associations throughout the state. Richards is one of a select few attorneys to be admitted into the Community Associations Institute’s (CAI) College of Community Association Lawyers. As a past president of the Utah Chapter of Community Associations Institute, Richards is an experienced, highly-regarded resource for associations in Utah, and frequently conducts board training classes. He is a prolific writer and lobbies on behalf of community associations. He successfully lobbied the Utah legislature on several bills pertinent to community association issues, including amendments to the Utah Condominium Ownership Act and introduction of the Utah Community Association Act in 2004, which he authored (Title 57, Chapter 8A). Richards has repeatedly been named as one of Utah’s “Legal Elite” in Real Estate by Utah Business magazine (2011, 2014, and 2015), and he was named one of “Utah’s Top Lawyers” by Utah Business magazine in 2013. Richards received his J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law in 1999, and was a third-year visiting student at the Brigham Young University, J. Reuben Clark Law School. He received his B.S. in Finance from the University of Utah in 1995. Richards is licensed to practice in Oregon and Utah.
Curtis G. Kimble, who is an established business and real estate attorney and founding member of Richards, Kimble & Winn, P.C., will continue his practice with Ball Janik LLP. Kimble’s practice is focused on establishing and advising condominium and homeowner associations, including providing counsel and representation for HOAs. He advises clients on governing documents, contracts, procedure and governance issues, insurance, HOA loans, Fair Housing Act certification and issues, enforcement issues, and litigation. Kimble received the AV® Preeminent™ Rating from Martindale–Hubbell®, American Registry, as well as the 2015 Client Distinction Award based on clients’ reviews by Lawyers.com, a Martindale-Hubble distinction. He received his J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2002, where he was a fellow and founding student member of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology Law. Kimble received a B.A. degree in English, with a minor in business in 1998 from the University of Utah. Kimble is licensed to practice in Utah.
Matthew J. Winn, who is also a founding member of Richards, Kimble, & Winn P.C., represents community associations and homeowner associations throughout the state of Utah. Winn’s practice includes handling complex contract litigation and real estate issues, common interest communities, landlord/tenant law, leases, covenant enforcements and restrictions, and community by-laws. He is a member of the national Community Associations Institute (CAI), and is active in its local Utah chapter, UCCAI, and is a member of the Utah Apartment Association. Winn is a member of the Real Estate and Litigation sections of the Utah State Bar Association, and participates in the Salt Lake County Bar Association. He received his J.D. from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah in 2007, and earned his B.A. in Finance from the University of Utah in 2003. Winn is licensed to practice in Utah.
