-Global Oil & Gas Company Relies on EMC for Reliable Connectivity Services and Support in Iraq-

“Our investments in global infrastructure, local field support centers, patented technology and key partners, such as O3b, allow us to build a custom communications solution, tailored for oil and gas customers...”- Abel Avellan, CEO, EMC

Emerging Markets Communications (EMC) announced today it has delivered the first high-throughput, satellite connectivity solution, leveraging O3b technology, for the oil and gas industry. The satellite communications service is for a global energy company, providing ultra-low latency, fully redundant connectivity, high speed bandwidth and local, ongoing support in Iraq.

EMC’s fully redundant satellite connectivity solution combines O3b’s high throughput, Ka-band capacity, as the back-up for the terrestrial link and C-band for additional redundancy. The technical solution is designed to provide seamless communication between multiple sites in Iraq, supporting back office applications, voice, internet access, and high definition video conferencing.

“As early adopters of technology, our oil and gas customers demand lower-latency connectivity solutions for bandwidth-hungry applications, with more reliability, even in the most remote places of the world,” said Abel Avellan, Founder and CEO, Emerging Markets Communications. “Our investments in global infrastructure, local field support centers, patented technology and key partners, such as O3b, allow us to build a custom communications solution, tailored for oil and gas customers looking to implement new technology.”

The use of O3b satellites, which are closer to the earth than conventional geostationary satellites, reduces latency, increases Internet speed and improves voice and video quality for the user. O3b’s next generation IP trunking solution boosts existing link capacities to rival the affordability and latency of fiber.

“The oil industry, which requires excellent connectivity in remote areas, is set to be a major beneficiary of the O3b network, said Omar Trujillo, O3b VP Latin America. This is the latest deal we have inked in the energy sector and one of the most significant to date. As O3b’s presence in the energy sector grows, we expect to accelerate the completion of further such deals.”

EMC’s Onshore Oil & Gas Services in Iraq

EMC currently provides satellite connectivity services for several global energy companies in Iraq for oilfield operations and remote offices. The company provides satellite connectivity in C-Band and Ka-Band and local field support from its centers in Basra and Baghdad to provide on-site technical assistance and spare parts. EMC is one of few providers with locally-employed engineers in this region, available 24 x 7 to deploy and maintain services.

EMC & O3b Increase Link Performance with MEO Booster™

To increase the efficiency and performance of the link, EMC and O3b incorporated the MEO Booster™, a patent pending technology that manages the seamless switch-over between the Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites in the radio frequency (RF) layer.

EMC Satcom Technologies, a division of EMC, and O3b partnered to develop the MEO Booster™ to increase the throughput and drive more performance for satellite connectivity in Ka-band. In combining co-located antenna apertures, the MEO Booster™ is able to increase remote receivers’ C/N by nearly 3dB. This results in a link performance improvement of 30-50% when combined with latest modem technologies like adaptive coding modulation (ACM).
